![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Amber Plains If you are in the middle of the Amber Plains, you are in the middle of a vast expanse of long, golden grass, with a fringe of dark green trees barely visible on the horizon. You are standing under a large tree of the same breed as those on the border of the Plain, which is the only source of shade. There are thousands of tiny field mice that live in the yellow grass. There is no water for miles.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Dust Storm Valley Dust storms are common in this large, dry, desert-like valley, hence the name. There is no water anywhere in the Valley, and it only ever rains once or twice in springtime. Rattle snakes are abundant here, as well as the mice they eat. It can get up to 110 degrees Farenheight at daytime, and at night it can get below freezing. This area probably has the most varied climate for hundreds of miles around.

At night, the whole place seems to glow with a bright, inviting light, coming, of course, from the thousands of fireflies that live there.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Forest of Shadows The Forest of Shadows is a small pine forest. The trees are spaced just far apart enough so as not to let any sunlight through the canopy, and the light that does somehow survive here only adds to the distinction of the shadows: the ghosts of the wolves who have lived here in the past.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Green Mirror Lake Green Mirror Lake is called "mirror" because of its unnatural stillness. There is no life in the lake because it is too free of life to support life. The long green grass is every where, and the tall evergreen trees are a startlingly vibrant emerald-green. This is why the Lake is also called "green": because of the way the surrounding plant life reflects its green color onto the surface. Prey is abundant here, and water is never a problem.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Ridge of Stars At night, the Ridge of Stars is a wonderful, romantic place for couples to be together. The whole sky is simply full of bright, twinkling stars. But the Ridge is always dangerous. Large, sharp boulders make up the bulk of the unstable mountainside, and there are regular rockslides.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Swift River On the edge of the Forest of Shadows, where the evergreens become deciduous, there is an extremely fast-moving river called the Swift River. There are large, smooth rocks scattered in the river and the surrounding area, adding to the momentum of the clear, bright water. There is an abundance of deer here, but strangely no other prey.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Timberline Mountain Timberline Mountain is really only a very large, pointed hill, not tall enough to be a true mountain. It was called "Timberline" Mountain because it comes to a peak right before the timberline would be, so this significant landmark is completely covered in evergreen trees. Strangely, there is snow on this 'mountain' all year-round.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Crystal Plains The Crystal Plains packland, named for the crystal-clear pool in the middle of the territory, is similar to the Amber Plains, but also has many differences. The Plains packland is a vast, lush green meadow many miles across, surrounded by a dark and hazardous forest inhabited by fear and nervousness. Through this forest is the only way to get to the Plains packland, so only the wolves most determined to join the pack are able to get through. The pond right in the center of this meadow has a grove of very tall pine trees growing around it with no undergrowth beneath these trees. Rabbits are common out on the open spaces, and a few deer can be found among the trees. The weather is always nice.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Frigid Mountains The Frigid Mountains packland is indeed frigid. It is the roughest packland to inhabit. The steep slope means that if you lose your balance, you fall all the way to the bottom unless you can stop yourself on time. There are many rocky, icy ridges on the mountain, and large boulders often come rolling down the mountainside. Avalanches are common. Only the hardiest of wolves can live here; the winters are bitter due to the always-below-zero temperature, the summers are hazardous because of the melting snow, creating swift, treacherous rivers. There is little prey here, but plenty of water.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Golden Hills The Golden Hills were discovered at sundown, at the time which the setting sun casts a beautiful golden light over the entire area. In this way they received their name. There are groves of deciduous trees in between the especially large hills, through which many tiny creeks run. The wolves that live here gradually build up muscle from all the climbing they must do, and become strong and fleet of foot over time. It is hot in summer, cold in winter, and there are many rabbits that inhabit this area.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Ivy Forest The forest of the Ivy Forest packland is a forest of evergreen trees. Every single one of these trees is covered thickly in a layer of ivy, which is poisonous to all creatures except the deer, which are plentiful. It is only a matter of time before these trees die from the lack of water caused by the ivy. There is a small grassy clearing where many types of deciduous nut-producing trees grow, which attract small prey such as squirrels and mice, which in turn attract larger birds of prey. There are no streams or ponds or any source of water except on the border, where a tiny stream trickles briefly onto Ivy Forest land before changing course and moving beyond the border.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Narrow Lake The Narrow Lake territory is entirely centered around one large, narrow lake with an island in the middle; there is only half a mile or so of land around the edges of the lake that stand within the borders. On one side of the lake evergreen trees grow and chipmunks and squirrels and mice are attracted to the pinecones. On the other side are deciduous trees and grassy meadows which attract a few deer and other large prey. Obviously the wolven inhabitants never run out of water, but prey can be a small issue because of the lack of land. Winter brings a foot or two of snow. The lake is very shallow; only two or three feet in the deepest areas, so the lake often freezes nearly solid in winter.

![[ ]](http://www.ssanpete.k12.ut.us/EES/lab/graphics/holiday/snowflake.gif) | Wildflower Valley Wildflower Valley is likely the nicest packland. In the spring and summer, wildflowers blanket the ground, attracting plenty of deer, rabbits and other prey for food, and there is a medium-sized lake in the middle of the packland for water. There is a deep spring running through the Valley, which salmon flock to in the fall in their effort to reach the Swift River, where they spawn. A few oak trees are scattered over the valley floor, shade for those hot, humid summer days. In the winter, there is only ever six inches or so of snow.
